A Guide to the
South Coast Beaches of Anguilla
By
Laurie L Harley
This
guide will help you find a south coast Anguilla beach for swimming,
snorkeling, hiking, or simply soaking in the sun.
Windward Point:
The stark wilderness of this beach is perfect for exploring. If you climb
the rock at the end of the island, you will discover a wonderful view of
Scrub Island. Wear hiking books and don't go alone, as this area is fairly
rocky and quite desolate.
Savannah Bay:
This crescent-shaped beach sweeps along the coast and backs against sand
dunes. It is a great place to watch the sunrise, go snorkeling, or gather
seashells. Stop by Palm Grove for lunch.
Mimi
Bay:
This isolated beach is off the beaten path and offers excellent views of St.
Martin and St. Barts. While swimming is not recommended, you might find some
beautiful seashells or enjoy a hike with a friend. The land is quite rugged,
so wear hiking boots and long pants if you intend to head off the shoreline.
Sandy Hill Bay:
This beach is a favorite of the locals. It sits on a protected bay and
offers lush greenery, calm water, and snorkeling opportunities.
Forest Bay:
Moor your tender at the pier and enjoy a meal at the popular Straw Hat
Restaurant. The beach itself offers beautiful views, although the water is
rather shallow. Swimming is possible off shore and snorkeling is great along
the lower areas of the bay, particularly at the large coral formation near
the restaurant.
Elsie Bay:
A well-protected beach that is best approached by the water. Coral
formations close to shore provide excellent opportunities for experienced
snorkelers. The water is calm with very little waves.
Little Harbour:
This protected beach is great for swimming and water activities. Lush
greenery surrounds the sandy beach and you'll have spectacular views of St.
Martin and St. Barts.
Blowing Point:
This beach might become crowded, as it is Anguilla's ferry port. However, to
the west of the ferry are secluded areas that are great for swimming and
picnics. Ferry Boat Inn serves lunch and dinner and Big Jim BBQ is also
nearby.
Rendezvous Bay:
This popular beach features relatively calm water considering there is no
reef. A small coral rock near the eastern end of the bay provides
opportunities for snorkeling. Other features include Bankie Banks Dune
Preserve and Moonsplash at the Dune Preserve.
Cove
Bay:
Excellent swimming is available at this Anguilla south coast beach. Sand
dunes line the beachfront and Smokey's Restaurant sits on the eastern
portion of the bay. Cove Bay is often deserted along the western portion of
the beach and there is a beautiful view of St. Martin and Saba islands.
Maunday's Bay:
This beach is accessible by water or through the Cap Juluca Resort, which
features three restaurants. The sparkling blue waters provide excellent
swimming environment in the sheltered bay.
Shoal Bay West:
A gentle crescent of soft sand and calm waters make this Anguilla beach a
popular sunbathing spot. Enjoy the view across the Caribbean of St. Martin,
Saba, and Anguillita Island. Cove Castles and Trattoria Tramonto are the two
restaurants serving Shoal Bay West.

A Guide to the North Coast Beaches of Anguilla
By Laurie L Harley
This guide will help you find a north coast Anguilla beach to fit your
mood or desired activity.
Captains Bay: While not a swimming beach, due to the strong
undertow, this deserted beach is lined with coral cliffs making for a
stunning view. This beach offers a private area for picnicking, hiking, or
photographing some amazing shots.
Island Harbour: This crescent-shaped beach offers calm waters and
relaxing views. Homemade boats are in the harbor and the local fisherman can
be seen rowing out to sea. While swimming is possible, the waters are often
filled seaweed.
Shoal Bay East: This popular beach is protected by a coral reef,
allowing for calm clear waters and nearby snorkeling opportunities. Plenty
of beach bars are available, but are quite unobtrusive to the beauty of the
beach. Shoal Bay East was rated one of the ten best Caribbean beaches.
Limestone Bay: This secluded beach offers a wonderful view of the
sun setting into the Atlantic Ocean. The waters are not recommended for
swimming or snorkeling except for experienced swimmers because of the strong
current. Anguilla's sea turtles and iguanas come here to nest.
Little Bay: This little beach is best accessible by boat as it is
surrounded by tall cliffs that hide the beach away from most tourists. The
marine life along the cliff wall as well as in the coral reef is abundant,
providing a wonderful location for snorkeling. This reef protects the water
from the rougher waves of the ocean and a gentle slope allows for a fun and
relaxing swim.
Crocus Bay: Others often skip over this pretty beach with its
majestic cliffs and shallow water. The bay is great for snorkeling, as the
waters are filled with brightly colored fishes and coral. Between Crocus Bay
and Little Bay is a small beach that it accessible only by water. On the
west end of Crocus Bay are large star fish and fossils of sea animals in the
broken pieces of rock from the cliff.
Katouche Bay: This beach is made for hiking. Trails lead through
Anguilla's rain forest to the top of the hill or to Iguana Cave. The water
is not protected by reefs and typically has a strong undertow, so swimming
here is not advised.
Road Bay: Anguilla's main for ships, Road Bay is the center of the
island's night life. The beach is long and curves gently against the water.
High cliffs sit behind Road Bay beach and a salt pond lies behind it.
Prickley Pear Cay & Sandy Island: These small cays are a popular
yacht charter destination because they give the impression of untouched
deserted islands.
Long Bay: This beautiful beach that remains fairly quiet. Nearby
Oliver's restaurant sits overlooking the beach.
Meads Bay: This popular Anguilla beach is perfect for swimming or
simply sunbathing. Nearby are several restaurants as well as Malliouhana
Spa.
Barnes Bay: Beautiful views and unique rock formations make this
beach worthy of a visit. Restaurants are easily accessible. Barnes Bay is
recommended for strong swimmers only.
